Ukrainian president says coup attempt against him imminent as Russian tensions rise

Ukraine‘s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that he had received information about a possible attempt to organize a cut against him next week.

Zelenskiy told a press conference that the coup could take place in early December.

He did not accuse Russia of involvement but spoke of a threat of military escalation from Moscow.

“We have challenges not only from the Russian Federation and possible escalation – we have great internal challenges. I have received information that a coup will take place in our country on December 1 and 2, ”Zelenskiy said.

Russia has built forces near its border with Ukraine, and Kiev, the United States and NATO have expressed concerns about a possible attack – a suggestion the Kremlin has rejected.

Tensions are growing between the two countries, raising fears that a long-standing conflict between Ukraine and Russia-backed separatists could escalate into yet another open war.

“We are in full control of our borders and are fully prepared for any escalation,” Zelenskiy said.

Ukraine’s ties with Russia collapsed in 2014 after Moscow annexed Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula and supported separatists who seized part of eastern Ukraine, sometimes known as of Donbass, a territory that Kiev says it wants to recover.
