The Uganda men's cricket team will visit Sri Lanka for a 14-day training camp as they continue their preparations for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup to be held in the West Indies and USA from June 1-29. After winning the Africa leg of the tournament qualifiers, Uganda are in Group C with co-hosts West Indies, Afghanistan, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, their first participation in the showpiece event.
The team will play seven T20 matches against select teams in Sri Lanka during their time in the country and will be in Galle from February 10-23. “The plan is to give the boys more game time against tough opposition and get them better in terms of skill development and maintenance ahead of the next phase of our preparations, which is the T20Is.”
“It is also important that we start finding the right combinations by batting and bowling in different conditions to test the progress of certain players. Uganda's interim head coach Jackson Ogwang said in a statement that, like India, Sri Lanka also gives the batsmen the opportunity to face fast and swing bowlers, considering that we will face more fast bowlers than ever before.
Last month, the Ugandan team traveled to Saphale, Maharashtra for 12 days and stayed at the Omtex ICWC Cricket Institute, where they played nine matches against the academy's senior men's team and Mumbai A Division. As for the squad for the Sri Lanka preparatory camp, Juma Miyagi has made a good recovery from the back injury that kept him out of action since April last year and has been included in the 15-man squad.
Alpesh Ramjani and Bilal Hasan who missed the India tour are also included in the final tour squad. Fred Achelam, Ronald Lutaaya and Innocent Mwebaze have retained their places in the team after performing well on the India tour.
