India are back in another Under-19 World Cup final. The record five-time winners defeated South Africa by two wickets in the semi-finals to reach their fifth consecutive U19 World Cup final and ninth overall to qualify for the summit clash. Now, the Colts in Blue will face Australia in the final match which will be played at Willowmoor Park, Benoni, South Africa on Sunday, February 11. The U19 World Cup summit on Sunday will be the third consecutive ICC event. There will be a contest between Australia and India in the final. The two arch-rivals had previously faced each other in the ICC World Test Championship final and the ODI World Cup final in 2023.
As India prepare for Sunday's contest, we take a look at their past performances in the history of Under-19 World Cup finals.
2000 world cup
India reached the final of the Under-19 World Cup for the first time in the 1999–2000 edition of the tournament. Making their first appearance in the Under-19 World Cup final, India produced a spectacular performance to defeat Sri Lanka by six wickets.
2006 world cup
India appeared in the Under-19 World Cup final for the second time in February 2006 but this time it turned out to be a heartbreaking affair. Facing arch-rival Pakistan in the final, India lost by 38 runs. Chasing the target of 110 runs, the Indian team was out for 71 runs.
2008 world cup
India took its talent forward in the next edition of the competition and reached the final stage once again. Indian youth, led by Virat Kohli, performed brilliantly and defeated South Africa by 12 runs (D/L method) in the final.
2012 world cup
In 2012, the Indian team once again hoisted the winning flag in the Under-19 World Cup held in Australia. Under the leadership of Unmukt Chand, India Under-19 defeated Australia by six wickets in the final. Captain Unmukt Chand, who scored a brilliant century in the final, was adjudged Player of the Match.
2016 world cup
India managed to reach the final of the 2015–16 Under-19 World Cup but they lost in the last stage. Facing a strong West Indies team featuring Shimron Hetmyer, Keemo Paul and Alzarri Joseph, India lost the final by five wickets. Chasing a total of 146 runs, the Caribbean team scored the winning run with three balls remaining.
2018 world cup
India rectified their mistakes and took a step forward to successfully lift the trophy in the next edition of the Under-19 World Cup. Facing a strong Australian team in the final, the Prithvi Shaw-led side registered an emphatic eight-wicket win to become the Under-19 World Champions.
2020 world cup
In the next edition, India once again reached the final of the Under-19 World Cup but this time their campaign was heart-breaking. While competing against neighboring Bangladesh in the final, the Indian team had to face defeat by three wickets.
2022 world cup
Thanks to Raj Bawa's sensational all-round ability, India won their fifth Under-19 World Cup title last time by defeating England in the final. In that game, the England team batting first was reduced to 189 runs. Raj recorded sensational figures of 5/31 to take the lead for India. Later, Raj played a crucial inning of 35 runs in 54 balls to lead India to a remarkable victory. Nishant Sindhu and Sheikh Rashid also made important contributions by scoring half-centuries for India in that game.
