The growing proliferation of online shopping could lead to a decline in Chinese stores, but statistics show that stores still play an important role in the retail world.
The latest US National Retail Federation (NRF) rankings show that by 2020, the industry’s largest companies still boast thousands of physical stores.
David Markot of Canter SVP Retail Insights, which provides data for the NRF list, said the industry will face changes and challenges for the future.
He told Newsweek: 2019 was the last boring year with boring predictions. 2020 was chaotic, with new realities in business every week
“2021 has been more stable, but with fewer items, fewer promotions, and less in-store investment; buyers still don’t care about the experience.
2022 will be exciting as the competition returns and M&A. [Mergers & Acquisitions] Really unloads but with a very delicate supply chain every decision depends on the buyer having the product in hand before making it. “
Markot warned that the epidemic could not be the only threat to retailers on the horizon.
“In 2021 and 2022, everything will be about the fragile supply chain, where every part is under such pressure that even a minor disruption can bring it down.”
