The Barstow Police Department said that at approximately 11:00 pm on Monday, the Pomona Police Department notified them of a suspicious death that occurred in Barstow.

Earlier that evening, Pomona police asked Pomona Valley Hospital to investigate the suspicious death of a one-year-old boy who arrived unconscious and was pronounced dead on arrival by medical personnel.

Pomona detectives noticed that the child had sustained injuries consistent with ongoing abuse. They also noticed visible signs of trauma on the boy’s body, such as bruising, bruising and burn marks. Some injuries were at various stages of the healing process.

Pomona’s detectives also determined that the abuse likely took place at the child’s home where he lived with his parents in Barstow.

Detectives also said the boy died from these injuries in Barstow before his parents took him to Pomona.

After the Pomona Police notified the BPD of the status of their investigation, Barstow Police assigned homicide detectives and crime scene investigators who arrived at the orphanage on the 700 East Virginia Way block in Barstow and Pomona Valley Hospital.

Barstow’s detectives Matthew Helms and Monty Franklin responded to Pomona, where they interviewed witnesses and contacted the victim’s parents, Mendes and Miller.

Detectives learned that at around 7 p.m. Monday, Mendez and Miller arrived unexpectedly at the Mendez family home in Pomona, nearly 90 miles from Barstow.

Relatives found the child’s lifeless body in the back seat of the couple’s car.

Some of Mendes’ family members immediately took the boy’s body to the clinic for treatment, while Mendes and Miller remained at the family’s home.

After some time, Miller arrived at the hospital, where she was detained by police officers. Mendez left the family home, was found and detained by Pomona police in the 2100 block of Spencer Street.

Barstow police detectives issued a warrant to search the couple’s home and car, where they found evidence believed to have been used in the attack on the child.
