ORIGINAL STORY:

Vanderhoof is under citywide lockdown due to an active gunman who fired at the RCMP detachment on Thursday.

Residents of the Vanderhoof area are being asked to stay indoors and take shelter, lock doors and refrain from leaving their homes and businesses at this time.

Everyone is asked to avoid the area.

WL McLeod Elementary School and Nechako Valley High School are closed until further notice, school officials have confirmed.

Shortly after 12:15 a.m., a witness said a man could be seen walking towards the detachment with a long gun before gunshots were heard.

Police believe the suspect alone is driving a white Ford extended cab pickup truck. Anyone who sees the suspect or his vehicle is asked not to approach and to call 911 immediately.

More soon.
