Dozens of reporters and cameramen were on hand as Massey Hall CEO Jesse Kumagai counted down the streets to rekindle the Sacred Hall’s exterior sign from 1894 ahead of a media tour of the recent facelift from the beloved live performance venue.

Construction workers were busy hammering, drilling and putting the finishing touches to the venue with Lightfoot set to return with a trio of shows in less than 24 hours starting Thursday night.

Most notable on the 2,550-seat site are the new, fresh red seats. They are wider, more comfortable, and with more legroom than the older wooden ones, with 470 removable floors to allow 750 general admission standing when the act calls for it.

The seats on the balconies on the second and third floors will remain in place.

There have also been restrooms and bars set up on each floor – previously customers had to drag her to the basement – and hallways made of gangways attached to the building.

The beautiful original stained glass windows in Massey Hall have also been restored and represent the largest collection of stained glass in Canada outside of a church setting.

“I think (the spectators) are going to see a Massey Hall that they remember and cherish and feel like it’s been treated really well and looks spectacular,” Kumagai said.
