TRENTON, NJ — U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat who avoided conviction on corruption charges five years ago, is reportedly the subject of a new federal investigation.

Michael Solomon, an adviser to the senator, acknowledged the investigation in a statement Wednesday.

He said that Senator Menendez is aware of an investigation that was reported today, but he does not know the scope of the investigation. “As always, should an official inquiry be made, the senator is available to provide any assistance requested from him or his office.”

Startup news organization Semaphore reported Wednesday that Manhattan-based federal prosecutors had contacted people connected to Menendez in recent weeks, citing two people familiar with the inquiry.

They did not provide details on what the investigation was about or what alleged wrongdoing was involved.

The US attorney’s office in Manhattan declined to comment. Menendez’s Senate office cited Solomon’s statement.

Menendez was indicted in 2015, accused of abusing his office to help a Florida eye doctor who gave him lavish gifts — including a Dominican resort and a trip to Paris. Travel on a private plane was also included for the holiday.

Prosecutors said the senator pressured government officials to settle a Medicare billing dispute in favor of Dr. Salomon Melgon. They said Menendez also helped obtain U.S. visas for the doctor’s girlfriends and worked to secure a contract to supply Meljon with port screening equipment.

Menendez’s attorneys argued that Melgen’s gifts were tokens of their long-standing friendship, not bribes. Menendez paid for some trips to Melgen’s resort in the Dominican Republic.

A jury deadlocked on the charges in 2017. Prosecutors declined to retry Menendez. The senator maintained his innocence and was re-elected in 2018.

Melgan was convicted of health care fraud in Florida, but former President Donald Trump commuted his sentence in his final days in office. A White House statement at the time credited Menendez with supporting the pardon.
