Oak Fire: Air quality advisory issued as smoke from Mariposa Co., wildfire forecast to reach San Francisco Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Smoke from the Oak Fire is billowing across the state and experts believe some of the smoke may already be in the Bay Area.

Clouds of smoke have been billowing across Mariposa County since the Oak Fire broke out Friday. Now a forecast that shows some of that smoke over the San Francisco Bay Area in the next 24 to 48 hours.

“We expect smoke from the Oak Fire to drift into the Bay Area. The higher elevations may have some smoke impact,” said Erin DeMerritt of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

While skies were clear over San Francisco and the East Bay on Sunday, there are air quality advisories in place.

Smoke from the Oak Fire can be seen from the International Space Station. The National Weather Service released a time-lapse smoke forecast map showing smoke at higher elevations throughout the Bay Area through Tuesday.

The smoke has already affected several counties.

“It looks like an apocalypse. I mean you look up when the sun is behind it. From early morning until noon the sun is in the direction of the smoke and it’s just this red ball that glows in the sky. has been, and everything has an orange color to it so it’s really ugly,” said Scott Patrick of Mariposa County.

Patrick vacated his home on Saturday. The house still stands today, but its sky detail is reminiscent of what the Bay Area has seen many times, including an orange-looking sky from 2020.

Here’s what we asked De Merritt about Sunday.

“Right now we don’t expect those impacts, as I said the air quality is moderate to good, and we expect that for the rest of the week, but when the wildfires are active. “Conditions can change quickly so we’ll be closely monitoring air quality,” De Merritt said.

If you smell smoke, experts we spoke to say the recommendation is simple, go inside and close your windows and doors.
