Nuclear power plant accident claims victims – rt world news



A worker died and three others were hospitalized after a carbon dioxide leak at the Ascó nuclear power plant in Catalonia, Spain. Local authorities suspect an overload in the plant’s fire protection system.

Seven fire brigade units and four medical emergency vehicles were deployed to Ascó on Wednesday evening around 7 p.m. local time. Emergency teams secured the facility and evacuated the injured.



The factory fire fighting system “Suffered a CO2 leak which affected four people”, Catalan authorities said.

One of the affected workers has died, while the other three are currently hospitalized in the nearby town of Móra d’Ebre.



According to the central and local authorities, no radiation was emitted during the incident. The Ascó plant was investigated for a radioactive leak at the Unit 1 reactor in November 2007, leading to the dismissal of its director.
