Novel protein sources for dogs and cats are not as novel as they used to be. A few years ago, feeding a bison or rabbit to your pet companion seemed unusual – but nowadays, these meats and others are becoming more accessible and appearing on the menus of premium pet food companies. Novel or alternative protein is a boon for dogs and cats who are allergic to more common meats, such as beef and chicken. They have also gained popularity since 2007, and, more recently, the widespread recall of pet food. Covid-19 global epidemic, When food supply chains have become more fragile (see below). Novel proteins and their benefits

How COVID-19 has affected the pet food industry.

As with many more, COVID-19 epidemics have affected the pet food and supply chain, whether we are buying cabbage or preparing whole home food.

In early July 2020, reports said that the pet food market has faced many challenges, ranging from a complete lockdown to the restoration of the manufacturing process in locations around the world, to new packaging methods. Each challenge has led to a growing demand for “natural” animal products, and greater transparency when it comes to selling ingredients and products.

I have received many calls, emails and texts from people who have difficulty finding food so they can prepare food for their dogs. However, with some measures, concerns turned to “ah” moments, as special orders became more popular, and alternative sources of protein were explored. While preparing this article, in fact, I noticed that a local health food store was bringing in more new protein when “normal” was not available.

A good way to introduce your dog or cat to a new protein is to try the following recipes. They are tasty, nutritious, and your four-legged friend will definitely enjoy them!


Choose organic ingredients whenever possible.

Yak O Noodle Doo.


1 pound ground yak (you can also use ground bison, elk, kangaroo, or ostrich)

Press 3 tablespoons olive oil first.

2 cups fresh black, chopped.

1 teaspoon sea salt.

1 teaspoon turmeric.

3 cups of filtered water.

Wheat-free noodles (made with Super Super Grain Fosley, Chia, Quinoa, Amaranth and Sorghum)


Prepare the noodles and set aside. Combine all ingredients except the previously pressed olive oil. Place the olive oil in a medium-sized pan and turn up the heat. When you see the first bubbles on the surface of the oil, add the yak mixture. Turn off the heat to boil. Mix gently with a wooden spoon until all the pink is gone. Remove the pan from the oven, and allow to cool before serving on the noodles.

Change it: This new protein synthesis can also be offered raw. You can also try black mash instead of noodles, by drizzling the black in a food processor or blender with a drizzle of previously pressed olive oil.

Duck with Quinoa – Medal of Flavors.

2 pound duck (eg legs and queens)

½ Cup (6 to 8) dried shtik mushrooms or other dried mushrooms of your choice.

3 strips combo clip.

1 lump of fresh ginger.

1 teaspoon sea salt.

5 cups filtered water.

1 cup quinoa


Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. As soon as you have the rolling boil, turn the heat to medium heat. Keep boiling until the duck meat starts to fall off the bones – this will take 1½2 to 2 hours. Remove the meat from the bones. Discard the bones and return the meat to the pot. Now you have duck soup.

To prepare quinoa, place it in a strainer and rinse thoroughly under filtered water. Put in a small pot and add 1¼2 cup of filtered water. Turn up the heat. As soon as the bubbles appear, lower the heat to a boil, cover the pot, and allow 12 minutes. Turn off the heat. Using a fork, “fluff” the quinoa, then leave it for 5 minutes. Serve with duck soup mixture at room temperature.

Change it: This dish can also be served with Thai Jasmine rice, which is perfect for gastrointestinal problems. It’s easy to add to duck soup, once you’ve removed the meat from the bones. Put only 1 cup of rice in the pot, and boil for about 20 minutes, until water is absorbed. Serve chilled. This is a dish that the whole family can enjoy.

Wild about the pig.


1 pound ground pig.

Press 3 tablespoons olive oil first.

1 whole egg.

* Teaspoon of sea salt.

1 tablespoon fresh oregano leaves, chopped or cracked or 1-1 / 2 teaspoons oregano rub


Combine all ingredients except olive oil in a medium sized bowl. Using a teaspoon or spoon, make meatballs, depending on the size of your dog. First put the olive oil in the pan and turn the heat to medium. As soon as the bubbles begin to appear, add the pork balls. Turn the meatballs a few times – this is done when there is no pink left.

Cool the pan with fresh green beans or seasonal vegetable mash (see below) and cool to room temperature, and for extra pizza, add water buffalo yogurt or any other yogurt of your choice.

This recipe can be prepared as a raw or cooked food topper or side dish for your novel protein recipes.

Ingredients for raw mash.

4 to 6 cups brightly colored fruits and vegetables (such as blackberries, broccoli, carrots)

3 cups of filtered water.


Just whisk all the ingredients in the food processor. Sprinkle with pressed olive oil, or any other oil of your choice before serving.

Ingredients for cooked mesh.

4 to 6 cups of brightly colored fruits and vegetables.

6 cherry tomatoes.

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil pressed first.

1 teaspoon sea salt.


Chop vegetables by hand or use a food processor. Transfer to a medium pan. Add oil and salt. Turn on the stove until the bubbles begin to form, then turn down the heat to boil, and cook gently for 15 minutes. Cool before serving. This mesh is easy to store in the fridge or freezer.
