Lori Loughlin poses for a last minute photo with Levar Burton

When Lori Loughlin announced her public return to the more respectable part of Hollywood society last week, she couldn’t have dreamed of a better opportunity than to have her photo taken with actor LeVar Burton, longtime host of the Emmy Award-winning PBS children’s literacy show. Reading Rainbow.

The opportunity for the disgraced Full House star to be involved with the venerable Burton came Monday, apparently thanks to Laughlin’s Hallmark colleague, Holly Robinson Peet. Laughlin, the public face of the college admissions scandal, joined Burton and the even more famous Magic Johnson to celebrate Pete’s receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Peet is also known for her work on Vacationing with Mr. Cooper and 21 Jump Street.

At the Pete’s Walk of Fame event, Laughlin, 57, smiled for photographers as she wore all white. She is still on a two-year supervised release following a two-month stint in federal prison in 2020.

While Johnson performed at the star’s dedication ceremony, Laughlin, known for playing the virtuous Aunt Becky in Full House, was photographed sitting next to Burton. During his long career, Burton has also earned the label of useful.

The 65-year-old actor rose to fame in the 1970s playing Kunta Kinte in the acclaimed television miniseries Roots and then achieved a memorable twist on the Star Trek universe by playing Geordie La Forge in Star Trek: The Next Generation. He also received Grammy and NAACP Image awards, as well as a Peabody Award for executive production of Reading Rainbow, an episode of engaging and inspiring educational content for children. Most recently, Burton was a top contender to replace Alex Trebek as host of Jeopardy! and he served as Grand Marshal of the 2022 Rose Parade in Pasadena.

To be able to communicate publicly with Burton and Johnson, Laughlin seems to have a good friend in Pete, who was likely responsible for Laughlin’s other notable red carpet moment this week. Laughlin attended the DesignCare 2022 Gala for the HollyRod Foundation in Los Angeles. The non-profit organization is led by Peet and her husband Rodney Peet and aims to help families with loved ones diagnosed with autism or Parkinson’s disease.

The gala marked Laughlin’s first red carpet appearance since March 2019. It was then that she and her husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, were arrested and charged with paying a $500,000 bribe to get their hands on their unqualified daughters, Olivia Jade and Isabella Giannulli. fraudulently entered the University of Southern California under the pretense of being a talented athlete on the crew team.

Laughlin and Giannulli were the two most notorious defendants in a nationwide bribery scheme that showed the lengths some wealthy parents would go to get their children into elite universities.

For over a year, Laughlin and Giannulli maintained their innocence of the charges, expressed fear that they were the targets of malicious prosecution, and argued that they would be acquitted in court. But in May 2020, they agreed to plead guilty.

They were sentenced to terms in federal prison: Laughlin received two months and Giannulli received five months. Laughlin completed her stay at Dublin Federal Correctional Institution and was released just after Christmas in 2020. She will remain under supervision until December 2022, during which time she will need special permission to travel outside the larger Los Angeles area for work or pleasure.

Over the past year, Laughlin has also begun to reopen. Although Hallmark cut ties with Laughlin after the college admissions scandal broke, she was able to reprise her role as Abigail Stanton, first created on Hallmark’s When the Heart Calls, for two episodes of the spin-off. When Hope Calls” which was produced by another network.

Laughlin has not spoken publicly about her role in the scandal, other than when she was sentenced. She said she “regrets” the “terrible decision” she made by allowing herself to “deviate from my moral compass”.

Laughlin said she finally realized that her decision exacerbated existing inequalities in society in general and in higher education in particular. The actress said she can only “take charge and move forward”, explaining that she has “great faith in God” and in redemption.

“I will do everything in my power to redeem myself and use this experience as a catalyst to do good,” she said.
