Liverpool vs Porto LIVE: Champions League team news, line-ups and more tonight

Thiago on Liverpool challenge and self-improvement under Klopp

Pressure is released for Liverpool tonight as they host FC Port in the Champions League, but everything remains to be played on the visitors’ side. The Reds have won each of their first four group stage games to seal first place and advance to the final 16, while the Portuguese sit second with two games left – just one point ahead of Atletico Madrid .

While some fans might like to see the Reds turn to some extent and preserve the top-choice stars who will have an inevitably busy run in the December matches, Jurgen Klopp’s chances of doing so are hampered by injuries in course, especially in midfield. They come into this game full of confidence and looking sharp after a landslide victory over Arsenal this weekend, the Reds having lost only one game in all competitions this season.

Porto aren’t much worse than that, in fact, with just two losses to themselves in 2021/22 – but one of them came against the Reds two months ago, when Roberto’s trident Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane each found the net in a 5-1 beating. Jurgen Klopp on Takumi Minamino, who starts tonight after scoring his first goal at Anfield against Arsenal on Saturday:

“Taki scored for us this weekend after being on the pitch for a few seconds and I promise you there won’t have been a more popular goalscorer in our squad by then. You can tell that at based on all our reactions.

“This is of course in part because we love him as a person. He has such a warm and generous soul. However, it was much more than his endearing personality that made us so happy. the attitude he shows and the contribution he brings day in and day out.

“Without a doubt, he’s a person who helps set our standards. I can’t say enough good things about his level in training. He gets the most out of each session. It’s a trainer’s dream.

Liverpool vs. Porto

When Liverpool face Porto, we expect two things: a lot of goals and big wins from Liverpool.

Under Klopp, the Reds won 5-0, 4-1 and 5-1 against tonight’s opponents – although those hammer blows all took place in Porto.

These beatings have largely made return matches at Anfield a non-event – let’s hope that won’t be the case tonight!

Jurgen Klopp on Liverpool debutant, 19, Tyler Morton:

“Tyler represents all that is great about the young footballers at our club.

“He doesn’t have to wait on him anymore, so I’m not going to write a ‘love song’ here about what he’s going to do in the game or what kind of player he is and could be. We’ll see. on that and he’ll write his own story, but it’s who he is that makes him very special.

“He won those Premier League minutes [against Arsenal] and in doing so, set an example for the young players who will inevitably follow him. He is such a credit to himself and his family.

“His job now is to continue to build on the best personal qualities that have helped him so far. That’s it: to be the same guy who sees every second with the first team as an opportunity to learn and be better.

Liverpool vs Porto: team news

Tyler Morton is only entitled to his second start for Liverpool, and it’s in the Champions League! What a moment for the 19-year-old midfielder.

He is one of four changes at Liverpool with Neco Williams – who is also only making his second start of the season – Ibrahima Konate and Takumi Minamino.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane start but Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson and Diogo Jota are resting – or starting on the bench, at least.

Elsewhere in the Liverpool midfielder, one player who doesn’t want to rest tonight will be Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has recently achieved some form of form and will be desperate for another opportunity to impress Klopp.

Oxlade-Chamberlain may have put in his best performance of the season in Saturday’s 4-0 win over his former side Arsenal.

As Melissa Reddy writes, the 28-year-old’s shot to recover at Liverpool came to fruition following injuries to James Milner, Curtis Jones and Naby Keita.

Now Oxlade-Chamberlain has the chance to help Liverpool’s next evolutionary step. Can he take it?

Indeed, Morton made his Premier League debut on Saturday in the final stages of Liverpool’s resounding 4-0 victory over Arsenal.

And his rapid rise to the first-team could continue tonight if he is offered a first Champions League appearance against Porto.

“I don’t know what will happen tomorrow night, but Tyler Morton’s progress has been pretty impressive,” Klopp said this week.

“Tyler had the whole preseason with us, you could see his technical skills but how well educated and well behaved the youngsters are.

“He wasn’t too confident, let me put it like that, he tried to adjust a bit to what the first team was doing.

“It was good, not spectacular, but hey, then we had the game against Norwich where he came in the second half and played a great game, to be honest, that made all the difference.

“You could see the next day how the confidence level had exploded overnight and I saw it for the first time. He is well placed at the moment. Pretty sure he would give the same answer! Now let’s work from here.

Liverpool vs Porto: the lineups planned

Could it be a possible Liverpool team for the visit to Porto tonight? Liverpool: Kelleher; Williams, Konaté, Matip, Robertson; Fabinho, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Henderson; Salah, Origi, Minamino.

Porto: Marchesin; Corona, Pepe, Mbemba, Sanusi; Otavio, Uribe, Oliveira, Diaz; Taremi, Evanilson.

Latest from Liverpool vs Porto

Ahead of the game at Anfield, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was asked about the possibility of turning his squad given that the Reds are not only already qualified for the last 16, but they are assured of the first place of the group. He has recognized that it will protect players who need it, but ruled out fielding a full backup and youth squad and noted that the physical fitness and injury risks on the squad would play a role in his decision-making.

“We always respect the competition but first we have to think about ourselves, our schedule and the situation of our players,” he said.

“At this time of the season, the medical department has a big hand in the rosters.

“It’s really easy to sit there, all of you judging us, and say ‘leave it out, leave it out, leave it out.’ If we leave them all out and play with a team that is not a Champions League team – we don’t have enough players for that, by the way – then nobody can get hurt.

Latest from Liverpool vs Porto

Liverpool hammered Porto 5-1 on their own home ground at the Estadio do Dragao in late September, a result which was the first loss of the campaign for Sergio Conceicao and his side. It was a humiliating result and many mistakes were made at home as the Reds went wild – but before the return leg at Anfield the Portuguese team manager believes that they have now overcome these defensive shortcomings.

“This game was awhile ago. We corrected our mistakes and we worked on it,” he said.

“There were some issues in the positions but we analyzed it in depth and focused on the game, it will be a different game. The game is what we make of it. We cannot control our strategy. opponents but it won’t be much different from what they have shown in recent weeks.

“We have our own weapons, our ambitions and we will not only go for one more game but a game which will be decisive, crucial.”
