Four teenagers have been arrested after a 12-year-old girl was assaulted in Liverpool city center last night before she died in hospital.

Detectives believe Ava White and her friends had an argument before she was assaulted.

Police were called around 8:40 p.m. and found her collapsed on the ground as a member of the public provided first aid.

Ava was then taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital where she died shortly after, despite the best efforts of medical staff.

Four boys – one 13, two 14 and another 15, all from Toxteth, were arrested on suspicion of murder.

Merseyside Police Deputy Chief Constable Jon Roy said: “Our thoughts and condolences go out to Ava’s family, who are supported by specialist Family Liaison Officers.

“Their world has been torn apart and no parent should ever have to face that knock on the door of the police to say their child has passed away.

“We believe that Ava and her friends were involved in a verbal argument which resulted in Ava’s assault causing catastrophic injuries.

“And we understand that the offenders were then seen running down School Lane across Hanover Street and Fleet Street.

“Liverpool city center was very busy at the time of the incident as the Christmas tree lights on Church Street had been officially on shortly before and we are appealing to all who were on Church Street and who saw the incident, or could even have captured it on their cellphones, to come forward.
