Hormone treatment for sex reassignment injured Swedish children – media – RT World News

According to the national television channel SVT, up to 13 children suffered side effects from hormone therapy while receiving treatment for gender dysmorphia in Sweden.

In a report published Swedish TV station SVT on Wednesday revealed that doctors at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm had stopped new hormonal treatments for children with gender dysmorphia in May, over concerns “Potential side effects”.

The hospital noted in new guidelines that the treatments are controversial and that there is a lack of scientific support for them. Data regarding the extent of side effects and the number of children affected have not been made public.

After an internal review by the hospital, SVT conducted its own investigation. They say a total of 13 children have been injured in one way or another by the treatment they received in the hospital. A child, Leo, started treatment with hormone inhibitors at the age of 11. Almost five years later, Leo was diagnosed with osteoporosis and doctors recorded changes in his vertebrae. Its growth has also been severely slowed down.

“The injuries that have been caused by treatment with us, we obviously have a responsibility for” Svante Norgren, head of the Astrid Lindgren Children’s Hospital at Karolinska University Hospital, told National TV station.

Other injuries sustained as a result of treatment include suspected liver damage and severe deterioration in mental well-being. A child was also diagnosed with reduced bone density after two years of treatment with hormone blockers.

The hospital said it was unaware that 13 children were injured by their treatment. “We are two different units. The pediatric hospital takes care of the pediatric part – the investigation and the psychiatric follow-up are within the KID team [Gender Identity Investigations of Children and Adolescents], “ Norgren said.
