Can Honey and Bee Propolis Help Your Dog or Cat? Let’s take a look!

Honey is a special medicine both inside and outside. New Zealand’s Manuka type is Kingpin, but there are many other honey from around the world that share something special with us.

Honey contains health-promoting antioxidants, including flavonoids. Dark color, deep taste. Black varieties, such as Bakuhat, Baba and Topilo, contain most antioxidants.

What makes it special outside of its antioxidant properties? Dr. Peter Mullen, MBE, Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Waikato, New Zealand, conducted research on the healing properties of honey. He found that its acidity or pH was low enough to inhibit the growth of very small types of bacteria. Honey’s ability to absorb water from the wound may deprive the bacteria of the moisture it needs to grow.

In addition, when honey dissolves from the wound fluid, an enzyme is activated that produces hydrogen peroxide, an important antibacterial agent. Research shows that it reduces inflammation and reduces the pain of serious wounds and burns. Honey dressings do not stick to the wound, so the newly formed tissue does not compromise so easily. This makes honey the perfect “band aid”.

“It provides a moist, healing environment but still prevents bacterial growth even when the wounds are severely affected,” said Dr. Mullen. “It is an effective means of disinfecting highly infected wounds, without the harmful effects of antibiotics, and it is also effective against antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.”

There is also the UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) to consider. UMF is a phytochemically derived antibacterial property found in some strains of Manuka honey. Honey should be tested for this particular property. The UMF rating of 10 is recognized for the least beneficial healing properties. The “UMF” on the Manuka honey label guarantees that this particular antibacterial benefit to the product is at least up to the indicated level.

Bee Propolis.

Affectionately called “bee glue”, propolis is a natural substance collected by the worker. Bees Used from the resin of selected trees and to line their hives. In the form of a tincture, you can use it for wound care, as it has antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties.
