The Indian Under-19 team suffered a crushing defeat by 79 runs at the hands of Australia in the Youth World Cup final in Benoni on Sunday (February 11).

The Boys in Blue dominated throughout the tournament and won all six matches before the final. However, Australia defeated them in the final to win their fourth ICC Under-19 World Cup title.

In this important final, Australia, batting first, scored 253/7 runs in the stipulated 50 overs. Harjas Singh was the top scorer with 55 runs while Hugh Wiebgen (48), Oliver Peak (46) and Harry Dixon (42) made notable contributions with the bat.

For India, fast bowler Raj Limbani bowled brilliantly and took three wickets for 38 runs in 10 overs.

In reply, India's innings was reduced to 174 runs in just 43.5 overs. It was a disappointing batting performance as most of the wickets fell at single digit scores. Adarsh Singh scored the highest 47 runs.

For Australia, Mahali Beardman (3-15) and Rafe McMillan (3-43) took three wickets each, while Callum Vidler took two wickets.

India may have failed to win the title but the tournament produced many quality players like Uday Saharan, Musheer Khan and Sachin Dhas, who could be the future of Indian cricket.

Despite the defeat in the final, the Indian Under-19 team was praised by members of the Indian cricket fraternity including Shikhar Dhawan and Ishant Sharma.
