Companies are paying six-figure salaries to interns in the face of fierce competition for the best candidates

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Summer is just around the corner, which means many students are looking forward to news of their summer internships.

In some areas, an internship can earn a six-figure annual salary.

Besides the pay, experts say 7 On Your Side, it can also lead to a full-time job and even change the course of your career.

Jenna Yi completed an internship at Salesforce in 2020.

“I will take any opportunity that comes my way and really take advantage of those opportunities,” Yi said.

Jenna Buslam joined Roblox the same year, also as a trainee.

“I knew it had to be an experience that really decides what I want to do in the future,” Buslam said.

Both Jennas took positions in two of the highest paid firms in the country.

A survey by Glassdoor found that Roblox is paying its interns an average monthly salary of $9,667 this year. This is the highest rate in the country.

Salesforce pays an average monthly salary of $8,167. This fourth place is not far from Uber and Capitol One.

“So industries like tech and finance are trying to make those connections with students before they graduate because they understand how difficult it is to hire the best people,” said Daniel Zhao, senior economist at Glassdoor.

He’s not surprised that both Jennas turned their internships into full-time jobs. Students should view these internships as job interviews.

“I knew that because this was a company in a very high growth stage, I would have a lot of career opportunities,” Buslam said.

Candidates should not be intimidated by the job description because the competition for good talent is high.

“It’s possible to apply for an internship even if you don’t necessarily meet the requirements 100%, as long as you have some qualifications that will help you get there,” Zhao advised.

Yi has a background in computer science, but Salesforce gave her an internship in infrastructure design.

“I have no idea what it was. I said, you know what, I think it will be a good experience. Let’s do it,” she said.

Many internships have disappeared during the pandemic, but Glassdoor tells us they are starting to make a comeback.
